Imphal, August 23 2014 :
The Indian Journalists Union (IJU), an apex body of the working journalists in India, has joined the international journalists' community in condemning the brutal beheading of American journalist James Foley (40) by militants of Islamic States of Syria & Iraq (ISSI) .
The ISSI militants released a video of the journalist's beheading on last Tuesday after the American special operation to rescue the captives failed.
James Foley was working for Global Post and international news agency, AFP.
In a statement, the union said the international organizations of the working journalists should launch a powerful and wide spread campaign to secure the lives of journalists in the conflict areas and non-conflict areas alike and added that this cowardly act highlights the grave threats that journalists face while covering conflict situations.
The union lamented that more than 72 journalists were killed in conflict and non-conflict areas in India in the last one decade and not even a single case was solved and culprits convicted so far.
The IJU would launch a powerful movement to demand enactment of special law to protect the journalist from assaults and attacks by extremists of various hues, mafia and the security forces in the country, the statement said.
