Farmers protest irrigation water scarcity

Under the aegis of Modern Era Farmers' Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Limited, Oinam; aggrieved farmers of Bishnupur district organised a sit-in protest against irrigation water scarcity and infrastructure deficiency at Oinam Keithel, Bishnupur on Sunday.
Interacting with the media at the protest site, secretary of the farmers' society Thingbaijam Swarankumar thanked DC Bishnupur for prohibiting letting loose of cattle upon the request of the society.
Members of the society took up vegetable farming in around 120 hectares of land after Central Agricultural University and district agriculture office, Bishnupur provided seeds.
The Modi government is taking up initiatives to double the income of farmers.
However, in the state, lack of proper infrastructure for irrigation' has led to crop failure instead of enhancing farmers' income, he said, while urging the department concerned to take up necessary measures for providing irrigation water at the earliest.
Loktak Lift Irrigation Farmers Development Committee (LOLIFAD) member Ngangom Ibotombi also appealed to the authority concerned to release irrigation water in time so that the farmers could get a good harvest.
The farmers have been raising the same demand every year and yet the department concerned never understands the situation and fails to take up necessary measures, he lamented, while terming it as an irresponsible act.
Later, fertilisers were distributed to farmers at the office of the Modern Era Farmers' Multi-Purpose Co operative Society Ltd.
