Major Chongtham Mia remembered

Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighter of Kangleipak on Monday observed the 114th death anniversary of Major Chongtham Mia, who played a major role in the Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 during a commemorative event held at Pheidabung Memorial Site, BT Park here.
Speaking at the programme which was marked by paying of floral tributes to the photo of Major Chongtham Mia, Committee chairman Yumnamcha Dilipkumar contended that for the past 130 years, the state government and the public have been unaware of many venerable martyrs of the war.
Nevertheless, the Committee and the families of the martyrs have been honouring them in addition to tracing their life stories, he said and maintained that the observance event has been initiated to express the pride of being their descendants and to emphasise on following their footsteps.
People can never fprget the role of martyr Major Chongtham Mia and his sacrifice will be etched in the history of Manipur forever, he added.
United Chongthas president Chongtham Tomba mentioned that in the Anglo-Manipuri War 1891, Major Chongtham Miya led 400 soldiers and fought bravely against the enemies in the Khongjom battle.
Let the spirit of patriotism, courage, intelligence and sacrifice of the martyr inspire the present generation, he exhorted.
The commemorative event was also attended by leaders of various CSOs and women groups and family members of Major Chongtham Mia.
