Dy CM stresses on developing scientific temperament

Deputy chief minister Yumnam Joykumar has said that effective communication should be encouraged for developing and spreading scientific temperament among masses in the state.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a three-day training workshop for science communicators on Script Development/Writing held at the auditorium of Manipur Science Centre at Takyelpat on Tuesday, the deputy CM stressed that communicators should be able to convince people by using simple and easily understandable words while spreading scientific message to the people.
He said there may not be problem in verbal communications but there have been difficulties in written communications.
He further said that younger generation should be encouraged to learn the things existing in nature as it will help them to imagine and think what science is all about.
Expressing concern about lack of or minimal scientific article or message in the local dailies, Joykumar asked the Centre's officials for starting publication of Scientific Journals at the earliest to enable the science communicators publish their writings on different topics.
Using internet will also be helpful for spreading scientific information, he noted.
Former vice chancellor of Manipur University, professor HNK Sharma said role of science communicators is important to spread the scientific knowledge to the masses.
Although there have been difficulties in spreading scientific information due to many reasons, communicators should always try to use simple words and minimize formulas and mathematical equations.
Such workshops will be very helpful in developing easy techniques in disseminating scientific information to the society, he said.
Director of MASTEC Dr L Dinachandra Singh informed that MASTEC have been organising such workshops especially for science communicators regularly since 1999.Eight such workshops had been conducted in the state.
Science & Technology director Homila Hongrei also addressed the gathering while Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi science communication consultant Dr CM Nautiyal spoke on the importance of science communicators in spreading scientific information to the masses.
The three-day workshop is being attended by a total of 52 participants.
