Facility for persons with Mental illness set up

Under the aegis joint of National Mental Health Programme, NHM and State Health Society, Centre for Development Activities (CDAC), Wangjing has established a Day Care Centre for Persons with Mental Illness" on Public Private Partnership Model (PPP Model) at Wangjing in Thoubal district on Wednesday.
A targeted intervention programme on suicide prevention was also held as a part of the launch programme.
The programme held at CDAC complex located at Wangjng Bazar Moirangthem Leirak was attended by State Health Society director Dr N Shyamjai Singh, Thoubal chief medical officer Dr Y Nokul Singh, National Mental Health Programme state nodal officer Dr A Ranita Devi, Manipur State Mental Health Authority member secretary Dr Kh Robindro Singh and Wangjing Lamding Municipal Council ex-vice chairperson N Binoy Singh as presidium members.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Shyamjai said that the newly opened day care centre for Persons with Mental Illness sanctioned by ministry is the first project in Manipur.
Pointing out that there has been increasing cases of depression and other mental illness among the people following the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, Dr Shyamjai encouraged people who are not well mentally to visit the centre and consult expert doctors.
Similar centres will also be set up in other districts if the Wangjing facility is successful, he added.
During the technical session, DMHP Thoubal district nodal officer Dr Jina Heigrujam talked on 'Prevalence & Causes of Suicide".
Manipur State Mental Health Authority member secretary, Dr Kh Robindro Singh on 'Identifying of a Suicidal Person and Approaching him/her' and District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Chandel psychiatrist Dr M Sushilkumar Singh on 'Welfare Scheme of Persons with Mental Illness (PMI)' as the resource persons.
