Ukhrul, January 05 2022:
Ukhrul town is literally turning into a dumping yard with piles of garbage occupying road sides and corners in the main market areas.
Apart from posing a public health risk, haphazard dumping of the waste is causing serious inconvenience to the public.
Apparently, the piles of trash have been lying uncleared for a prolonged period as sanitary workers of the Small Town Committee (STC) of the ADC Ukhrul were on leave during the festive season.
It's not known whether the sanitary workers have resumed their duty but the volume of garbage continues to grow each day.
In Phungreitang market, the waste not Only covers the roadside but is also strewn onto the main roadway.
The place is one of the most crowded areas and is the site where the statue of the Father of the Nation MK Gandhi stands.
The district Police Reserve Line and the Ava Market are also located nearby.
Passers-by are finding it difficult to use the main roadway due to the unsightly presence of the waste and the stench emanating from the dumping spot.
Town residents expressed serious concern over the failure of the authority concerned to clear the waste in a timely manner.
According to a town resident Hungyohung, garbage clearance is the duty of the committee under Ukhrul ADC.
"We know that the ADC council has been dissolved but there is CEO who should discharge their duties.
They can t stop their civic duties like this," he said.
He said that haphazard dumping of waste in public places left an unhealthy sight for the public.
The authority should also make efforts to educate the public, especially business folks in order to dissuade them from discarding their commercial waste indiscriminately.
