Imphal, September 30 2022:
Sahitya Thoupang Lup observed the International Translation Day at Manipur Legislative Assembly Museum & Archives, Old Assembly Road, here, on Friday with Manipur Legislative Assembly secretary Karam Meghajit Singh and Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti president Naoroibam Indramani Singh as the chief guest and president respectively.
Addressing the gathering, Lup president Tongbram Am-arjit noted that as the usage of languages of smaller ethnic groups has been on the decline such a trend could ultimately lead to disappearance of some languages.
He said that even if an ethnic group has its own script and language, the same faces the risk of going extinct if not in use and as such urged the government to give emphasis or extend assistance in or ganising the Translation Day observance at the state level.
As part of the programme, the Thiyam Ibochoubi National Award, 2022 was conferred upon Dr Haorongbam Rajmani Singh of Cachar, Assam in recognition of his role and contribution towards establishment of Barak Museum and Library in 2015 to safeguard and promote Manipuri culture and literature.
The awardee is currently assistant professor of Manipuri Department in Assam University and has guided 13 PhD scholars so far.
English translation of books on Hijam Irabot, Elangbam Nilakanta, Laishram Samarendra, Rajkumar Madhubir and Biren were discussed as part of the programme, during which MU assistant professor Dr Chirom Rajketan Singh also delivered a lecture related to the role of translation in promotion of Manipuri Sahitya.
