Imphal, August 22 2022:
Women Action for Development (WAD) has condemned the alleged rape of a student of Saina Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Porompat by the founder of the said institute on August 14 in the name of elopement.
In a release, WAD programme coordinator Tuithung Aphy stated that the incident will also lead to a trust deficit between the student and the teacher community in the society as two women teachers are also reportedly involved in the incident.
On the other hand, as per the information received from the field visit made by their team, the police failed to arrest the main accused namely Yumnam Surjitkumar of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai, Imphal East, even after an FIR was lodged at WPS, Lamphel on August 16 .
Such negligence of the police station concerned will delay the course of investigation for delivering justice to the aggrieved party, it noted.
WAD also expressed deep concern over the unfortunate situation faced by women, children and students who are not safe in our own state, in our home, schools and institutions.
"To whom should we blame, the government/ governance or should we remain silent in the name of development and wait for another women's war," it said.
WAD further urged the WPS Imphal West concerned to arrest the main accused immediately and submit detailed report of the case to the court concerned to reject any pre-arrest bail and to arrest all the co-accused for thorough investigation so as to ensure justice according to the rule of law.
WAD also asserted that no influential party should try to protect the accused person(s) .
