Imphal, May 28 2022:
A one-day seminar on 'Problems and Prospects of Women Entrepreneurs in Manipur' was organised by Institute of Development Studies (IDS) Manipur at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday.
Oinam MLA Irengbam Nalini and IDS Manipur chairman professor N Mohendro attended the seminar as chief guest and president respectively while Thangjam Agro Industries Private Limited managing director Thangjam Joykumar and UNACCO School managing director Ningombam Irabanta were present as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, professor Mohendro stressed on the role of entrepreneurs in development of a society.
They are the people in between innovation and production and are keys to improv ing the socio-economic condition of a society.
Economies of developed countries including China and developing countries are fuelled by entrepreneurs who have a sense of nationalism in their hearts, he said, while emphasising the importance of integrating nationalism with entrepreneurship.
Women entrepreneurs are emerging in healthy numbers in the state but there is still lack of handholding support and guidance for them, which is very unfortunate, he said.
As per the 4th All Handloom Census 2019-20 report, the number of households with handlooms with export potential in northeast is 2308 in Assam, 119 in Sikkim and 118 in Mizoram.
But Manipur, which is known for its handloom products, has only 70 households with export potentials.
This shows the state's inability for expansion in the sector and backwardness in job creation and production.
This has raised a question on the existing policy of the state, he added.
