Imphal, January 24 2022:
Naga Women Union (NWU) has appealed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to reschedule the polling date of the first phase of Manipur Assembly Election which falls on Sunday (February 27) .
"NWU would like to register our sentiments of hurt to the ECI and the chief electoral officer (CEO) Manipur, for setting the date of polling on Sunday (February 27), for the nine hill assembly constituencies of Manipur," the Naga women organisation said in a statement on Monday.
NWU said that India as a "secular state whereby the social pluralism is fortified by the unique constitution", should uphold the principles of the Indian Constitution in letter and in spirit.
It also said that the people residing in the nine hill assembly constituencies are predominantly Christians.
They are Saikul, Saitu, Tipaimukh, Thanlon, Kangopkpi, Henglep, Churuchandpur, Saikot and Singhat.
"Fixing a poll date on Sunday is against the religious sentiment of the minority Christian community in general and the communities of the said nine constituencies in particular," the NWU added.
NWU further emphasised that respecting the sentiments of minority religious groups will preserve the sanctity of the Indian Constitution and the re-arrangement of polling date will serve the interest of every citizen in Manipur.
