Imphal, May 22 2022:
Manipur University of Culture (MUC) vice-chancellor professor Paonam Gunindro has called upon the scholars and cultural activists to join hands for promoting Manipuri culture instead of indulging in debates.
Speaking as chief guest of the 7th death anniversary observance of Guru Gourakishwar (Padmashri) and 2nd Guru Gourakishwar Sharma Memorial Lecture, 2022 organised by Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association, professor Gunindro asserted that there are several scholars, who are well-versed in the art and culture of the state.
However, many of them seem to have their own boundary thus preventing unity in promoting culture, which is very unfortunate.
Art and culture are not only the wealth of the state but also act as mirrors of the society.
Manipuri Sankirtana is derived from Bengali Kirtana but it has a unique characteristic due to the indigenous art and culture of the state, which is why it was listed in the UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage for Humanity List.
There is a strong need to promote the art and culture of the state by joining hands, he said.
Apart from offering floral tributes and Thang-Ta salute to the portrait of the late instructor, the association also honoured renowned Sankirtana Guru S Thanil (Padmashri) on the occasion.
Later, former JNMDA director L Upendra delivered the memorial lecture on the topic, 'Manipuri Culture and Intangible Cultural Heritage' .
