Kakching, May 14 2022:
Directorate of Research, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Lamphelpat in collaboration with Bharatiya Kishan Sangh - Manipur Prant organised a one-day Farmers' Field Day cum Fair at Kakching Khunou Thingnam Leikai Mandop on Saturday.
Organised under NEH Component AICRP on Seed (Crops), MAU-UP, the programme was attended by CAU director of Research Dr S Basanta as chief guest; Bharatiya Kishan Sangh - Manipur Prant president Nameirakpam Indubhusan as president and Kakching Khunou Municipal Council ex-chairperson Khumukcham Babu as guest of honour.
Research and Planning of AICRP on Seed Crops, CAU Imphal deputy director Dr Th Robindro delivered the keynote speech.
Speaking as the chief guest, Dr S Basanta informed that around 12 women farmers' Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Kakching Khunou were earlier provided with seeds of winter crops (watermelons, cucumber, pumpkin, gourd, etc) for cultivation in 10 'lou pari'.
The fair was organised to check the status of the crops, he said, while adding that all of these efforts will help realise PM Modi's vision of doubling the income of farmers and CM Biren's dream of a self-sustained Manipur.
Dr Basanta, however, remarked that farmers seem to be unaware of the many government schemes introduced for their benefit.
As such, farmers should consult with their leaders and experts to learn more about these schemes.
The director further said that regular training from time to time is also necessary.
Thus, CAU, Imphal has been organising training programmes for farmers, wherein free seeds and other materials are often distributed to farmers.
At present, CAU, Imphal has a surplus of Tampha Phou variety.
He then appealed to farmers to adopt integrated farming so as to increase their income.
During the camp, stalls were opened by the 12 women farmers' SHGs namely Urirei, Leima, Premila, Kushumlei, Sepa, Takhellei, Mangai, Ibudhu Mangang, Kundolei, Kaboklei, Sana SHG and Petruklei.
A contest between the stalls was also organised, in which Leima SHG won the first place, while Kushumlei SHG bagged second place.
10 other SHGs were awarded consolation prizes.
The 12 SHGs were also presented with 6 battery-powered Sprayer pumps.
Later, the paddy fields under the SHGs were inspected.
