SEACO bats for statues of 'maichous' in Kangla

Lauding the initiative of the government for installing statues of seven 'maichous' (scholars) atop the Nongmaijing hill range, South East Asia Cultural Organisation (SEACO) has urged for installing of the same in Kangla as well.
In a release, SEACO secretary publicity Thanjam Inaocha said that Meeteis, who are an indigenous community of Manipur, erstwhile 'Kangleipak', have then-own unique culture, tradition and religion.
However, as many Meeteis started following Hindu, amalgamation of custom and tradition began, subsequently, affecting the identity of Meetei community.
There is also apprehension about extinction of Meetei community because of the danger posed to their indigenous customs and religion, the secretary said and stressed that the younger generation of 'Kangleicha' needs to revive the under-threat language, culture, tradition and religion.
Regarding the installation of seven 'maichous' atop Nongmaijing hill, Inaocha urged for forming an expert committee so as to avert any controversy in future and to have a far sighted vision.
While urging the government to install similar statues of 'maichous' in Kangla as well and vividly highlight the relationship with Kangla, its meaning and histories of that era, he expressed hope that the government will surely take up the initiative for installing statues of the 'maichous' in Kangla also.
