Imphal, January 12 2022:
Manipur People's Democratic Front (MPDF) secretary Sapam Samungou has stressed the need on the part of the authorities concerned to write to the Union government for imposition of President's Rule in the state, in due consideration of the rising violent crimes in connection with the upcoming polls.
Addressing a press meet held at Manipur Press Club here on Wednesday, Samungou pointed out that poll-related violent incidents were reported in Heirok AC even before the announcement of the election schedule.
Further incidents were reported in other parts including Wangoi AC where two people were shot dead.
Although elections are meant for the people to elect the candidate of their choice, it is for the first in the history of the state to witness people being killed for the sake of polls.
Thus, the present scenario cannot be regarded as a sign of improved law and order situation, he stated, while adding that the government should be responsible for all the poll-related deaths that have happened till date.
Noting that the politicians and their supporters are engaged in intense bickering with one another and burning effigies of leaders of rival parties, Samungou reiterated the need for imposition of President's Rule in the state.
He then urged for conducting the elections in accordance to the Constitution of India.
Both voters and candidates must respect their respective rights, he said and demanded strict punishment of those involved in incidents of poll violence.
