Imphal, December 09 2021:
Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) has applauded the combined team of 43 Assam Rifles and Tengnoupal district police, who seized methamphetamine drugs and heroin worth around Rs 500 crore at Moreh town in Tengnoupal district on December 6.According to a statement of CADA released by its Information & Publicity secretary Khundongbam Anand, the recent seizure is similar to recoveries in the past including the 2018 drug case in which Chandel ADC ex-chairman Lhukhosei Zou was arrested and the 2019 case wherein one Kyaw Kyaw Naing of Phoudel, Thoubal district was held.
However, the above drug kingpins managed to evade punishment by taking advantage of loopholes in the judiciary and using the close connection with those in the government.
Lhukhosei Zou was acquitted of all charges in the Rs 27 crore drug case, while Kyaw Kyaw Naing was granted bail in the Rs 400 crore drug case.
Thus, the number of drug smugglers in the state is increasing on daily basis, after witnessing such big drug kingpins getting away scot free.
As such, there is no need to rejoice over the seizure of Rs 500 crore of drugs.
The statement continued: "Manipur and Myanmar share a porous border which is taken full advantage of by the drug smugglers, with the goods being transported along Imphal-Moreh road.
This is a fact recognised by the state government as well as the Home Ministry.
If no stringent steps are taken up to prevent such illegal acts along the border, people can only ask if the central and the state governments are allowing the drug smugglers to carry on.
It would be better to put a stop to the "War on Drugs" campaign if the government plans to keep freeing drug cartels.
Thus, the government should not hesitate in handing out strict punishments to drug smugglers before the people decide to take the matter into their hands so as to save the future generations" .
