Six people including Mayeng-Lamjao Gram Panchayat pradhan U Narjit, Thounaojam Joykumar, U Rajmohol, U Ranjit, U Babuyaima and M Maniton have launched relay hunger strike at Lamjao Mayai Leikai community hall from Tuesday, demanding timely distribution of urea to genuine farmers and saving.
the food producers.
Speaking to media persons in connection with the relay hunger strike, pradhan U Narjit informed that though the farmers of the GP under Hiyanglam assembly constituency have received some amount of urea due to the effort of the local MLA, the required quantities are yet to be made available to the farmers.
Owing to apprehension of crop failure, farmers of Lamjao, Tejpur and Laimanai villages under the Mayeng-Lamjao GP staged a sit-in protest from July 30 demanding release of required quantity of fertiliser but without any positive response from authority concerned.
As such, they decided to go ahead with a relay hunger strike, he mentioned.
Narjit cautioned that if the government continues to ignore their demands then they are ready to resort to various other forms of protest including calling a bandh.
Meanwhile, Apunba Lou mi Lup, Mayeng Lamjao GP convener Ch Jiten has alleged that the relay hunger strike led by pradhan U Narjit is unreasonable and it is an attempt to malign the Lup which was responsible for distribution of urea in the GP along with the local MLA.
Speaking to media persons, Ch Jiten claimed that Hiyanglam MLA Dr Y Radheshyam has procured the required amount of urea bags and distributed them to the farmers of the AC in three phases.
In case of Mayeng-Lamjao GP also, the Lup under the aegis of the MLA provided the necessary quantity of urea needed by the farmers.
Considering this, organising of sit-in protests and hunger strike in the name of farmers not getting urea is condemnable.
It is nothing but an attempt to take political opportunism, he asserted and urged the people not to indulge in false propaganda.
Rather they should help the local MLA and the Lup in procuring more quantity of urea in the upcoming fourth phase of distribution, Jiten said.
