Guns, ammos snatched from security forces

Imphal, May 28 2023:
After simultaneous attacks carried out by Kuki militants on Meetei villages in the peripheral areas of the valley districts since the wee hours Sunday, enraged people snatched many firearms and ammunition from different security posts both in the valley and in Tengnoupal district.
Though exact number of weapons snatched could not be ascertained, sources informed that significant number of service weapons and am-munition were taken away by enraged people from 7MR, 3IRB, 6IRB, 8IRB, MPTC, Kakching district police and Tengnoupal district police.
This is the second time that enraged people took away arms and ammunition from security force since outbreak of communal violence on May 3 .
The weapons were snatched as news spread about attacks on Meetei villages and encounters between security forces and suspected Kuki militants in different parts of the state from Saturday midnight and Sunday morning.
Several Manipur police commandos and unidentified armed group members were also injured in these encounters in addition to civilian casualties and injuries.
To control the situation, additional security forces were deployed in all the troubled districts and the district administrations have cut short the curfew relaxation period by three hours in these districts.
Capital city Imphal falls in the lmphal East and Imphal West districts.
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai since Thursday and Army Chief General Manoj Pande since Saturday have been visiting trouble-torn Manipur.
Efforts were being made to restore peace and normalcy and meetings were being held with various stake-holders, including Civil Society Organisations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also expect-ed to visit Manipur for three days on Monday to take stock of the situation and resolve the ethnic crisis.
He is likely to meet with representatives of all communities, including Meitei and Kuki communities and urge them to maintain peace and harmony.
