Imphal, September 27 2022:
The JAC formed against the rape and sexual harassment of a SIMS student has cautioned of launching intense agitations if the government does not make its stance clear to the public on the issue by September 30 .
On Tuesday, a sit-in protest was staged at Kakwa Lamdaibung against the non-arrest of the four accused in the case.
Speaking on the sidelines, JAC convenor Laishram Roshini Devi urged the court concerned to reject anticipatory bails of SIMS founder cum managing director Yumnam Surjitkumar and teachers Y Nonibala alias Sonia, L Kunjarani Devi and SK Wajid Shah, and instead, award them befitting punishments as per the law of the land.
Stating that the case could have been resolved much earlier if the government was sincere enough; the convenor questioned why the government is apathetic with regard to crimes against women and children.
She further questioned why the four accused have not been arrested till date, while raising suspicion of some hidden conspiracy.
Roshini then remarked that if the wealthy people are allowed to act with impunity, the end of society is near.
However, the most shocking thing is that the CM, who also holds the home portfolio, has rejected all appointments with the JAC.
Although memorandum had been submitted, no action has been taken up till date, which contradicts the government's claim of addressing the grievances of people through Meeyamgi Numit but refuses to listen to the complaint of a student who had been harassed by the founder of an educational institution.
Thus, The JAC has almost no faith on the type of charge sheet that will be produced by the police department which is under the charge of an apathetic CM, she remarked.
Roshini continued that mob justice has been declared unlawful in the state.
But witnessing the present situation, people have no option other than to stage sit-in protests, take out rallies and call general strikes to ensure their complaints reach the government's ears.
If the government continues to feign ignorance and fails to take up appropriate action including arrest of the accused people and punishing them according to the law, it will only be inviting further unrest in the state, she cautioned.
