Imphal, May 26 2023:
Properties worth over Rs 30 crore of Manipur Mountaineering Institute (MMI) at Lamdan village un-der Henglep sub-division in Churachandpur district had been torched and reduced to ashes by suspected Kuki militants.
MMI spokesperson Dr L Surjit told media persons that infrastructures and towers of the institute at Lamdan village were com-pletely destroyed amidst the ongoing communal violence by well-armed Kuki mili-tants using powerful bombs on May 18 night.
The insti-tute has long been shoulder-ing immense responsibility in adventure and mountain-eering activities not only for the state but also for the entire North East.
he said adding that destruction of the invaluable assets of the people of the region should be condemned by every sec-tion of people.
According to Dr L Surjit, Manipur Mountaineering Institute was established on December 27,1985 when first Mount Everest climber Tenzing Norgay visited the state and footprint of the legendary mountaineer is still at the institute.
Apart from storing historical items as archives, the institute was established with facilities for research in adventure and mountaineering by future generation.
With the mot-to 'Aim High', the institute was established jointly with generous villagers and it was recognised by state gov-ernment as State Institute of Adventure in 1992, he added.
