Awareness program of Aromatic plants held

CSIR-Northeast Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat (Assam) in collaboration with Senapati Entrepreneur Associates (SEA) organised an awareness programme on cultivation, processing, value addition and marketing of aromatic plants at DRDA conference hall, Senapati on Thursday.
Delivering the keynote address of the programme, NEIST Jorhat director Dr G Narahari Sastry said that entrepreneurship and innovation when started from the grassroots level would be more sustainable and pointed out that agriculture has been the backbone of the country's economy.
Moreover, science and technology play a great role in improving people's health, in improving lifestyle, way of living, etc., where people use the knowledge of science and technology more productively.
To do things differently, to think and imagine differently is important, he stated.
Regarding aroma mission, the director explained that there are different types of possibilities with 20-30 different plants which require different levels of maintenance.
The director stressed the need to realise the importance of cultivating medicinal plants in a systematic way.
Most of the medicinal plants are harvested from forests but nobody takes the responsibility of planting medicinal plants in the forest where some plants are on the verge of extinction if proper care is not taken, Dr Sastry added.
The director also assured of all possible assistance from NEIST if the farmers would be sincere in cultivating the aromatic plants.
During the programme CSIR, NEIST, Jorhat senior scientist Dr Mohanlal spoke as resource person on the topic 'Cultivation, processing, value addition and marketing of aromatic plants'.
More than 100 local entrepreneurs attended the programme and seeds and saplings of aromatic plants were distributed to them at the end of the programme.
