Govindas hails dedicated service of VDF personnel

Works minister Govindas Konthoujam has said that Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel are playing key role in maintaining law and order in the state.
Speaking during the 14th state level raising day celebration of All Manipur VDF Welfare Association, Central Committee; here, on Monday, Govindas recalled the fluid law and order situation in the state in the past and how a shoot-out in Heirok led to establishment of VDF, initially in the model of SPO as implemented in some states.
VDF recruitments were conducted in every district but not many were enthusiastic in joining the force at that time.
Today, there are many in line eager to join the service, he noted while commending VDF as a force that plays key role in maintaining the law and order situation the state.
The minister also spoke on the importance of carrying out one's duty with sincerity and dedication in order to bring peace, tranquillity and development in the society and called upon the VDF personnel to make VDF a disciplined, well-organised and strong forces.
He further recalled the seizure of drugs by VDF personnel in Tronglaobi on February 23.The CM had also assured of providing whatever assistance needed to the bereaved family of VFP personnel N Premananda, who died while on duty of destroying illegal poppy cultivation in the hills, he said.
Govindas further recalled the assurance given by the chief minister of Rs 500 annual increment in the wages of VDF personnel and assured to apprise the CM about the memorandum submitted by the Association for one-time wage enhancement.
Besides, minister Govindas, who attended the celebration as the chief guest, All Manipur VDF Welfare Association chief advisor Wangkhemcha Shamjai presided over the programme while DGP Manipur C Doungel, SP Imphal West Ksh Shivakanta and All Manipur VDF Guardians' Association president Y Indrani were present as guests of honour.
Bishnupur District VDF Welfare Association also celebrated the raising day at Lainingthou Mayangamba community hall, Bishnupur on Monday with IGP Themthing Ngashangva and Bishnupur (SP) N Herojit attending as chief guest and president respectively.
ASP (Ops) Roni Mayengbam, ASP (LO) Satyam Takhellambam, SDPO Bishnupur Manor Prabhakar, Bishnupur District VDF Welfare Association president L Devan, and All Manipur VDF Welfare Association legal advisor Dr O Chaoba were also present on the occasion as guests of honour.
Floral tributes were paid to the portraits of 23 VDF personnel, who died in service.
Cash awards and certificates were presented to 53 VDF personnel and four commanders in recognition of their exemplary services.
