Imphal, March 05 2023:
Locals settling around the Loktak Lake have urged the state government for clarity on the proposed Loktak Ring Road before actual launch of the project.
After a joint meeting of the locals and Ring Road affected villagers at Oinam community hall in Bishnupur district on Sunday, one Thoudam Hero of Khoijuman Mayai Leikai informed news persons that they are ready to extend all possible assistance for protection and conservation of the lake.
While stressing the need to amend the Loktak Protection Act, 2006, Hero informed that construction of Ithai Barrage for generating hydro power raised the water level of the lake consequently leading to submergence of several acres of paddy fields.
Recalling that the government has not yet completed the disbursal of compensation to owners of the affected paddy fields till date in-spite of the barrage commissioned in 1983, Hero also demanded immediate decommission of the barrage.
While reiterating that the state government provide detailed information on the proposed Loktak Ring Road to the affected people, he also appealed for prioritising conservation of the lake based on scientific data.
