Imphal, December 02 2022:
Urging authorities concerned to take up steps to protect crops planted after harvesting paddy from damage by herds of stray cattle, United Progressive Farmers' Association (UPFA) has submitted a memorandum in this regard to DC Thoubal on Friday.
After submitting the memorandum, UPFA co-convener Laishram Iboton told media' persons that farmers plant crops in their paddy fields after harvesting paddy with the main objective of keeping their fields green with crops throughout the year.
However, stray cattle let loose by owners instead of sheltering at their sheds invade green fields and damage crops.
This has created huge problem to farmers who are enthusiastic of keeping their fields green throughout the year as fully grown crops often got damaged by stray cattle and farmers are unable to look after stray cattle round the clock, he said and urged the DC Thoubal to take up necessary steps in this regard.
According to Laishram Iboton, farmers of the state are not work-shy as alleged by different sections of the society but are hesitant to plant crops throughout the year due to various reasons like lack of irrigation facility, inability to control stray cattle and untimely distribution of seasonal crop seeds.
Despite facing numerous difficulties, farmers nowadays plant different crops to increase food production with the main objective of ensuring self -sufficient economy and improve socio-economic condition of the society.
With stray cattle continuing to be a big problem for farmers, the association convened a meeting on November 20 and decided to urge government to take up steps to prevent stray cattle from invading green paddy fields.
Accordingly, a memorandum was prepared and submitted to DC Thoubal, he said and expressed hope that government would take up necessary steps in this regard as the state cabinet had discussed the matter on November 25 last.
