Committee demands to stop soil quarrying

Maintaining that unregulated soil quarrying activities are continuing in the hills located in the vicinity of Imphal city, Save Environment Campaign Committee has demanded the state government to stop such illegal practices which are damaging the natural environment.
In a statement, the committee said that soil quarrying activities are being carried out in Heingang ching, Nongmaiching, Chingkhei ching and other hills located in the vicinity of Imphal city by taking advantage of the Covid lockdown.
The committee has found that some contractors are carrying out these illegal activities for their personal purposes.
Unfortunately, some MLAs are also reportedly supporting these activities, the statement said.
The High Court of Manipur had banned soil quarrying in the hillocks with effect from July 27, 2018.Moreover, these activities are being carried out in reserved forest areas, the statement said, while demanding the government to take up immediate steps to stop these activities failing which the committee will file a petition in the high court.
