Imphal, August 22 2022:
CPI would have supported Union minister RK Ranjan's call for changing the present system of agricultural practices to double the income of farmers had the minister translated his words into action, stated CPI Manipur state council assistant secretary M Jaykumar.
According to Jaykumar, conditions of farmers in Manipur have not changed till date and double income theory remains a distant dream and wishful thinking for them.
Doubling farmers' income particularly for the farmers in Manipur remains only on paper without any action and the vivid example of this is the widespread problem of shortage of urea being faced at present, he said in a statement and asked whether doubling farmers' income has to be realised with the government's policy or with the individual efforts of farmers.
Involvement of unemployed youth led to success of Maroi Nakupi farms in Khurai Top Moirangkampu area and farmers in these areas do not get any help from the government.
Similar is the case of farmers in Bishnupur area who have successfully taken up vegetable farming, Jaykumar said and maintained that Manipur is very far from the level of modern agriculture being practised in different developed countries.
He further said that mechanisation of agriculture could not be successfully taken up by individual farmers in Manipur due to the apathy of the government and its related department.
The assistant secretary then urged Union minister RK Ranjan to bring fund from the Centre if he is sincere enough for doubling income of farmers in Manipur.
