Imphal, July 23 2022:
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) today staged a protest demonstration demanding fulfilment of all the requirements of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) so that it can evolve into a full fledged university.
Starting from their head office located inside DMU campus, volunteers of the students' body took out a protest rally till the community hall of Ima Panthoibi, Thangmeiband Maisnam Leikai where they staged a sit-in-protest.
They put up placards and banners which read as "Make DMU a full fledged university", "DMU teachers should call off class boycott agitation", "Address students' restiveness", "Focus on education sector", "Education (U) Director must step down in the interest of student community" etc.
Even though DMU receives some fund under Section 2(F) of the UGC Act, the university is still the denied the benefits guaranteed under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, AMSU secretary general Thongam Bikramjit told media persons by the sideline of the protest demonstration.
Moreover, DMU has not been receiving any grant from Education (U) for the past four years.
As such, the university is wanting in all sectors, he said.
As per rules and regulations of the university, no bureaucrat officer or Registrar can serve as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for more than three years but the incumbent Registrar has been holding the post in the capacity of an OSD for more than four years, Bikramjit said.
It is matter of grave concern that the State Government has been working to establish another university by the name of Maharaja Kullachandra University at a time when DMU is still unable to achieve the status of a full fledged university, he remarked.
