Week-long children heart surgery camp concludes

A week-long free children heart surgery camp, which started on September 4 at SKY Hospital, here concluded on Thursday.
The camp was jointly organised by SKY Hospital, UK-based Healing Little Hearts and Manipur Heart Foundation, said a release of SKY Hospital.
According to the release, the last stitch from each child was removed on the concluding day and "they are recovering well".
Altogether, five very critically ill children with complex birth heart defects were operated.
The first patient, a 15-year old son of Thongminthang of Churachandpur district, had a complex condition called atrio ventricular canal defect (AVCD).
He underwent a complete intra-cardiac repair, while the second child, an 11-month-old born with 2 holes in heart VSD &ASD, severe pulmonary arterial hypertension and recurrent heart failure, was successfully operated on September 7.The third patient (6 months old) operated during the camp was the youngest and sickest of all.
The infant, son of Songkholian of Churachandpur, was operated with large VSD (9.1mm), supra-systemic PA pressure (109mmHg), recurrent heart failure and pneumonia.
He had to be admitted a few days before the operation date to stabilise his condition and make him fit for the high risk operation.
Usually, ventilator is removed from the patient in the OT or within a few hours after operation.
But this kid had to be on ventilator for 36 hours.
He is much better now and will grow up like any normal child but will require a close follow-up for the following few weeks as an out-patient, the hospital said.
It further said that the fourth patient, a six-year-old girl, d/o Moten Naorem of Imphal East, was born with a complex heart defect called tetralogy of fallot (ToF).
Her body oxygen was only 85 per cent but normalised after the operation, while the fifth child, d/o Ramesh Khumanthem of Imphal West, also had ToF with low body oxygen of 92 per cent which improved after operation.
Dr L Shyamkishore, chairman and chief cardiologist SKY Hospital, thanked the visiting team of Healing Little Hearts and SKY Hospital staff for making the camp a grand success.
In the meantime, he cautioned the people of the state to be aware of early sign and symptom of birth heart defects for early diagnosis and early appropriate treatment to save children's lives, the release added.
