Kakching catches up to 'Green City' mission

About 200 hanging flower pots have been installed at Kakching Keithel today as a part of the City beautification and cleanliness campaign launched jointly by European Manipuri Association, Korean Manipuri Association in collaboration with Kakchingl Municipal Council, Kakching Bazar Business Welfare Association and Library and Information Centre, Kakching.

Subadani, Chairperson of Kakching Municipal Council; M.Brojen, Vice- Chairperson of Kakching Municipal Council and L.Shyam, President of The Great Thoubal graced the inaugural function of the campaign held under the theme of "Beautification and Cleanliness of Kakching Keithel" as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, M.Brojensaid that Kakching Municipal Council (KMC) has engaged 30 sweepers to clean Kakching Keithel everyday.
KMC charges Rs.30 per household for collecting Garbage.
But the present rate will be increased to Rs.100 with effect from August this year.
A diesel auto carrying PA system will drive along the routes of Kakching giving the message of MY city, clean city.
Transport collection of solid waste will be strengthened to three times a day.
Shopkeepers also need to keep dust bins in front of their shops, he added.
Okram Bishorjit, President of European Manipuri Association, said that the event of cleaning up the city and hanging flower pots is a part of the strategy to bring a positive attitude in the mind of the people of Manipur which is today full of conflicts, stresses and killings.
Moreover, it is a mission to save our environment and make the people to live healthy amidst a healthy environment.
"We, the sons of this soil but living in European countries, have experienced the comforts of developed countries.
However, we can't spend our life comfortably there while our people in Manipur are living amidst dust.
Manipuris living abroad always care for their home state.
City beautification program is part of our contribution that we can extend to the people of this state," Bishorjit said.
Nahakpam Bidhan, Member of Korea Manipuri Association, stressed on the need to include solid waste management in the syllabus of school education to make the children aware of the need to keep their surrounding neat and clean.
He also assured all possible help from the side of KMA in keeping the city green and clean.
