Bodies condemn molestation, commend police

While condemning the sexual assault on a girl student, who was going for tuition at Keishampat Thiyam Leikai on October 4, United NGOs Mission Manipur Women Committee assistant coordinator Wahida Begum has demanded stringent punishment of the culprit Haobam Ibomcha at the earliest.
In a release, Wahida lauded the swift action of Imphal West district police in arresting the culprit and stated that as evidences of the incident are vividly found on CCTV footage there is no reason why the culprit should not be punished befittingly.
She further appealed to the government to initiate effective preventive measures to check recurrence of such gross incidents.
Women Action for Development (WAD) also strongly condemned the alleged molestation of a young student by the 43-year-old man on October 4.In a release, WAD said: "This is very unfortunate and shameful that the state has failed to protect and safeguard the future generations of our society.
WAD is very much concerned about the girls who left their homes for their studies since certain facilities are not available in the hills and rural areas of Manipur".
It then said that the incident must not be taken lightly while calling for attention to the reasons behind such increasing cases in the state.
The NGO also asked, "What has gone wrong with our society? What has happened to the moral values?" WAD thanked the people who had supported the young girl throughout her tough time, especially the teacher who took immediate action to help disclose the incident, the owners of the CCTV cameras for their cooperation and the police team led by SP Imphal West Ksh Shivakanta, additional SP (investigation unit crime against women) Ngasepam Rattana, Imphal police station OC N Ingocha and the team of Cyber Cell for their prompt action in arresting the perpetrator, Haobam Ibomcha within a short period of time.
WAD then urged the state government to deliver instant justice for the young girl since vital evidences are already available.
It also appealed to the government to establish certain facilities to protect the young students such unwanted situations.
