More power to SMC: Education minister

In a bid to ensure continuous improvement in government schools, the state government has decided to give more power to School Management Committee (SMC) for monitoring the functioning of the schools and working of the teachers, said education minister S Rajen.
He was attending as chief guest on the second day of the three-day Golden Jubilee Celebration of Wabagai Awang Leikai Youth Development Association (WALYDA), Wabagai Awang Leikai in Kakching district on Sunday.
Speaking at the event, Rajen revealed about the government's decision to upgrade Wabagai High School into Higher Secondary School following the demand of the local people.
He said that the department has appointed a regular principal and will soon send the required teachers.
Besides, initiatives to improve the infrastructure will be initiated soon, he added.
Maintaining that having good school building only cannot bring quality education, the minister stressed the need for proper and sincere discharge of duty by teaching staff and increasing the student strength through commitment and sincerity.
Emphasising on the role of SMC in improving condition of a school, he said that the government has decided to give more power to SMC to enable them to effectively monitor attendance and functioning of schools.
School dropouts are increasing as poor parents, who used to send their children in private schools, could no longer afford educational expenses and it is one of the main reasons for the government to take up aggressive initiatives for improving government schools and education sector through various schemes.
Assuring of a better education system than before, he urged parents to once again place their trust and send their children to government schools.
Hailing the club for its social activities since the past 50 years, Rajen emphasised the role of youth clubs in fighting Covid-19, social evils and bringing peace and development in the society.
He then urged clubs, organisations and Meira Paibi groups to take proactive role in ensuring free and fair election in their respectively localities.
He further said that the government led by chief minister N Biren has been putting its best efforts to bring afi round development in the state and it has been successful so far.
However, there are still hurdles since the government is a coalition government, he said while calling upon the people of the state to bring about a government of BJP alone in the state to see the real face of development.
WALYDA president Mayengbam Ranjit Luwang presided over the function which was attended as guests of honour by Wabagai ZP member Mayengbam Jayan-takumar, ex-MLA of Wabagai AC Dr Usham Deben, Human Rights Alert executive director Babloo Loitongbam.
Floral tributes were paid to departed members of the club and local elders were honoured by presenting gifts on the occasion.
