Imphal, July 05 2021:
United Women's Rights Defenders (UWRD) has urged the government to initiate relevant process for the removal of chairperson of Manipur State Women Commission (MSWC) Dr Binota Meinam.
Along with accusing the incumbent chairperson of being incompetent in work and abusing her position, UWRD convenor W Prabha contended in a statement that they have been compiling reports of various condemnations since 2019 against Binota's misdeeds and misgivings.
"Meinam Binota is not acting as per the rule of law but exercising the power beyond the guiding principles laid down under the Manipur State Commission for Women Act, 2006," it said.
The rights group demanded her termination from the post based on the recent order by High Court of Manipur suspending the proceedings of Complaint Case no 42 of 2021 of MSCW.
It said that the motion against her (Binota) seemed reasonable and accordingly she should be removed from the said post.
The convenor also referred to social media posts, news and other online campaigns against her after a team of MSCW led by Binota forcing a woman to sign a "Deed of Separation" in 2019 went viral.
The UWRD statement further pointed out that the Commission was established to work for the welfare of women, contractor to which the chairperson has been acting against the welfare of women of the state.
"Therefore, it is the right time for the state government to remove her from the post of chairperson.
We urge the chief minister to kindly remove her immediately by exercising the provisions of Manipur State Commission for Women Act, 2006 which empowers the government to remove a sitting chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women," it added.
