AR, police seize drugs, timber

Imphal, May 29 2022:
In two separate operations, Tengnoupal and Modi battalions of IGAR (South) foiled cross border smuggling of narcotics and timber in Tengnoupal and Chandel districts on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
According to PRO IGAR (S), the troops on routine checking of vehicles at Khudengthabi Vehicle Check Post intercepted a two wheeler vehicle search of which led to the seizure of 826 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 1.65 crore.
The drug consignment was contained in 20 soap cases concealed in the ve hide, the PRO said.
In another operation, Assam Rifles troops intercepted four vehicles car rying illegal timber from across the border near Pallel.
The seized timber was assessed to be worth Rs 32.48 lakh.
The recovered items along with the apprehended smugglers were handed over to Moreh Police and Forest department, Chandel for further investigation, added the PRO.
Meanwhile, a combined team of Kakching District Police Commando and women personnel apprehended two people with suspected opium (kani) during a frisking operation carried out near Sugnu Bailey Bridge along Sugnu-Churachandpur Inter District Road under Sugnu PS around 2pm Sunday.
The arrested people have been identified as Holkhomang Haokip (37) s/o Ngamdem Haokip of Henshi Village, Tolbung, Chandel, but presently residing at Semol Village, Churachandpur and his wife T Hatnu Haokip (30).According to a report by SP Kakching Shrey Vats, the team was carrying out a frisking operation when they halted a white colour Bolero Jeep (MN01G8414).On checking the vehicle, the team found 1.54 kg of a substance suspected to be opium.
Both the arrested people and the seized item have been handed over to Sugnu Police for further course of action, the report conveyed.
