An Ecological Park set up by Liyai Youth & Students' Union (LYSU) was inaugurated by Senapati Forest Division DFO D John Sha at Liyai village in Senapati district on Monday.
The park is dedicated to the guardians of Barak River source.
The site was chosen out of a barren land with some contributions from generous donors to attract tourists as well as to promote ecology of the region.
During the event, LYSU expressed its appreciation to former forest minister Th Shyamkumar for his support towards development of the park.
Speaking on the occasion, D John Sha lauded Liyai villagers for their effort to conserve forest in the region which has ensured that they enjoy abundance of water.
Calling the village as a blessed land, the DFO also urged different Poumai Naga villages facing scarcity of water for preserving forest.
The park will also spread awareness among the public who would come and watch how people of the village have been preserving the ecology, he added.
D John Sha also encouraged everyone to preserve the Barak River source for endless water supply to sustain life.
He said that the department has also been trying its best to plant more trees along the source.
Importance of water and the need to preserve the ecology should be lectured even in the churches, he asserted.
The DFO emphasised on the need to preserve wild life as human beings suffer due to absence of animals and wildlife on different occasions.
He pointed out that the Supreme Court has directed DC, SP and DFO concerned to book anyone who kills wildlife under Wildlife Protection Act.
With the state seeing increasing environmental problems, the penalty may become more stringent in near future, he cautioned.
