Imphal, May 19 2022:
Amid water level of all major rivers in the state flowing at danger level, the Top Khongnangmakhong bridge over Iril river in Imphal East district is in a precarious condition with likelihood of it being swept away by the strong current of the river.
The precarious condition of the bridge was inspected by members of Youth Progressive Organisation (YPO), Kshetri Bengoon Awang Leikai on Thursday.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, YPO general secretary Mujibur Rahaman stated that the bridge constructed 35 years ago is in on the verge of collapsing due to erosion of soil by flood water of Iril river on both sides of the bridge.
This has made the bridge very dangerous for crossing by vehicles.
On the other hand, the intake point of Porompat Water Supply constructed by Public Health Engineering Department near the bridge has also tilted towards the river.
The earth on the western edge of the bridge has eroded leaving the bridge in a perilous situation, he pointed out.
Mujibur urged the authority concerned to inspect the bridge and take up necessary precautionary measures before any unfortunate accident happens.
Meanwhile, Kshetrigao MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan on Wednesday inspected various embankments of rivers that are in danger of breaching by river water that has risen alarmingly due to continuous rainfall in the state in past few days.
As part of the inspection, strengthening of such embankments was carried out under his supervision him along with pumping out water from flooded areas.
The MLA also advised the people to stay alert of any possible breach of river banks and be prepared to move to a safer place.
He also assured to provide whatever help he could and if necessary will open relief camps.
