Imphal, May 14 2022:
Forest officials led by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force (HoFF) Dr Aditya K Joshi carried out survey of Singda Dam watershed/catchment area on Friday.
The Singda Dam catchment area is spread over roughly about 2300 hectares, out of which 310 acres have been acquired by water resources department in 1977.Given the receding nature of water level at Singda Dam, the CM had directed forest department and water resource department to take up necessary action for rejuvenating the dam's watershed area.
During the survey, the PCCF informed that more than half of the catchment area is planned to be treated with afforestation activities under KfW (Indo-German Project).
He directed the DFQ to take up afforestation/restoration activities in the remaining areas, particularly along the higher slope's on the north during the current year plantation season.
The idea of participatory plantation was also mooted by the PCCF as Singda Dam is the lifeline of most Imphal based residents irrespective of community.
Forest department is planning to initiate a "Save Singda, Save Water" campaign by means of participatory plantation starting from Monday.
Meanwhile, water resources department would take up eviction of those encroachers from within the 310 acres of land that was acquired by the department way back in the 70s.
