Imphal, June 13 2013:
Since the eviction of houses in Kabo Leikai was carried out forcibly against an order of the Manipur High Court, those involved in the eviction drive can be imprisoned for six months, MLA Y Erabot has observed.
Addressing media persons at his Khurai Ahongei residence today, Erabot observed that the Manipur High Court had earlier passed an order prohibiting eviction of houses in Kabo Leikai much before the eviction process was carried out.
Though the State Government had charged the settlers of possessing fake pattas, it was not able to provide proof to the court. Moreover, the State Government had been collecting taxes from the pattadars even though the Government claimed that the documents they posses are fake.
MLA Erabot further stated that forcibly evicting houses is against the law of the land.
The eviction can be carried out only after the settlers have been provided compensation for their land and houses and a proper place is provided for new constructions.
However, the government came all of a sudden and carried out the eviction process and imposing CrPC 144 in the area so that no agitation could be launched.
The MLA informed that more than hundreds of people who have been left homeless came to his place for shelter and he would provide all the necessary help from his side and see that justice is ensured.
