Farmers protest unavailability of fertiliser

Though agriculture minister O Lukhoi is claiming to have allocated urea fertiliser for Sugnu assembly more than the requirement, farmers of Kakching Khunou and Chairel are yet to get any urea despite submission of relevant documents and this prompted them to stage a protest on Saturday.
The unique protest by farmers launched at paddy fields of Kakching Khunou and Chairel was also supported by farmers of nearby villages like Umathel, Nungoo, Chairel Khunou and Khongyam.
While farmers of Kakching Khunou and Umathel staged the protest at Kakching Khunou Loukol (paddy held), farmers of Chairel, Nungoo, Chairel Khunou and Khongyam staged the protest at Chairel Loukol.
During the protest, farmers con demned statement of the agriculture minister and questioned as to why farmers of Kakching Khunou Loukol and Chairel Loukol'were not provided urea though the minister claimed to have provided excess quantity of urea for Sugnu AC.
Development Committee Kakching Khunou secretary Thingnam Rishikesh, who took part in the protest, said that around 716 farmers of Kakching Khunou and Chairel submitted their land documents and Aadhaar cards to DC Kakching for procuring urea after the chief minister and the agriculture minister made assurance in the Manipur Legislative Assembly that urea fertilizer will be provided adequately to farmers within a week.
Development Committees of other areas of Sugnu too submitted relevant documents for procuring urea at DC Kakching.
Even after submission of documents for more than one week, farmers of Kakching Khunou and Chairel are yet to get any urea till date, he said and appealed to government and the minister concerned to clarify on whereabouts of the 10,500 bags of urea claimed to have provided by the agriculture minister for Sugnu AC .
