Imphal, June 30 2013:
The Handloom Convention, 2013 which was held under the joint aegis of Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans Cooperative Society and Handloom Promotion Council has resolved to press the concerned authority to set up various institutions for promotion of handloom along with formulating a Handloom Policy of the State.
Other resolutions adopted by the Handloom Convention, 2013 which was held at Lamyanba Shanglen in Palace Compound today included to increase the wages of handloom weavers and artisans and to have a Handloom Advisory Board to protect and preserve the old designs of the various communities in the State.
Mutua Bahadur, Director of Mutua Museum, who was present at the convention, stated that we need to preserve, protect and use the indigenous handloom products of the State.
It would be very useful if the handloom products of the State are widely used in the rooms of Minister and MLAs instead of using the products brought from outside the State.
He also appealed to the handloom weavers and artisans to stick to the indigenous designs of the State instead of adopting the designs of other people.
Chingtam Luwang of Handloom Promotion Council pointed out that even though top government officials of the State always highlighted the importance of handloom products while speaking at various public functions, they never care to make any serious efforts for the development and promotion of the handloom products.
No separate institution of handloom has been set up in the State in spite of consistent demands and various agitations launched, he added.
The inaugural function of the Handloom Convention was attended by H Rajendra, Retired Assistant Director of Weavers Service Centre and S Inaobi, retired Deputy Director of Manipur Development Society as Chief Guest and functional President respectively.
N Leibakleima Devi, Chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board was also present on the occasion as Guest of Honour.
