UNM-M hails verdict in Leihaopokpi gang rape case

Women Committee of United NGOs Mission-Manipur (UNM-M) has welcomed the action taken up by A Noutuneshwari Devi, Additional Sessions Judge, Fast Track Court, Crime Against Women for awarding life time imprisonment for the main accused and 20 years imprisonment for the co-accused in the Leihaopokpi hillock gang rape case .
The Court yesterday sentenced the main accused Khuraijam Bungbung (30) s/o (L) Indrajit of Lamlongei to rigorous imprisonment for life and two co-accused Nongthombam Bocha alias Biren (43) s/o Bihari and Khuraijam Khamba (26) s/o Guno Singh both from Lamlongei Mantripukhri .
UNM-M in a press release also appreciated Manipur police particularly Heingang police station for their sincere work and swift action by farming charges against the main accused and the co-accused .
The organisation also welcomed the order passed by the Court recommending a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the victim under the scheme “Financial Assistance and Support Service to Victim of Rape : A Scheme for Retrospective Justice” launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development .
UNM-M requested the concerned authority to take up the cases of increasing numbers of crime against women and award befitting punishment to the accused according to the law of the land .
From January 1 to November 30 of this year, there were 37 numbers of rape, eight numbers of attempt to rape and 25 cases of murder reported, it added.
