Rabi crop campaign begins

Under the aegis of Agriculture Department, a Rabi crop campaign in respect of Bishnupur district was launched at the paddy fields of Ichum Keirap Kom Village Mamang on Sunday.
Organised jointly by All Manipur Progressive Farmers' Association, Loumi Sinmi Apunba Lup and the Agriculture Department, the launch programme of the campaign was attended by Agriculture director N Gojendro, District Agriculture Officer (DAO), Bishnupur S Jugeshwor, and representatives of All Manipur Progressive Farmers' Association and Loumi Sinmi Apunba Lup, Bishnupur.
Speaking on the occasion, director Gojendro informed that the campaign has been launched as part of the initiatives taken up by CM Bi-ren and Agriculture minister Th Biswajit for keeping the fields green all year round and also increase the income of the farmers.
The campaign would cover 500 'lou pari' in Bishnupur district, he added.
In his speech, Bishnupur DAO S Jugeshwor urged the farmers to plant the winter seeds provided by the department and cultivate them properly, while using the seeds produced for planting next year's.He also assured that the department will buy any excess yield from the farmers.
Meanwhile, All Manipur Progressive Farmers' Association president Thoiba Konthoujam remarked that although the farmers in the state may have ample water sources, lack of proper irrigation facilities is affecting the agricultural activities.
As such, the government needs to formulate an irrigation policy, he stressed while urging the educated group, especially those in white-collar jobs both in the hills and the valley to work together for making Manipur self-sustainable.
He then sought support from the people to all activities taken up by the Association for improving the income of farmers as well as in installation of new units of the body under the objective of attaining sustainability.
