Imphal, May 23 2018:
Decrying the demolition of a waiting shed in an eviction drive at Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai in Imphal West, youth club members of Singjamei Wangma Kshetri, Bheigyapati Leikai and surrounding localities staged a sit-in-protest today.
The protesters demanded the authority concerned to construct a new waiting shed in the original place at the earliest.
Talking to newspersons, Ksh Rajen, president of South East Youth Organisation (SEYO), Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai said that the waiting shed was dismantled in the ongoing eviction drive conducted for cleaning of riverbeds and banks of Imphal river.
He said that the waiting shed was constructed in the wing wall of the bridge and it does not pose hindrances to the water flow and banks of the river in any form.
He said that the waking shed constructed in the form of a public utility was providing relief mainly to school students and women vendors during the time of summer and rainfall.
He pointed out that the shed was not included in the list of those structures which were declared as illegal constructions in an order issued by DC Imphal East on January 20 last as per the Manipur Flood Plain Zoning Act, 1978.He conveyed that considering its purposes, the waiting shed was newly repaired by youth clubs in association with Ucheckon Nongchup Zilla Parishad Member, Seram Neken on May 20 and dedicated to the locals.
Unfortunately, the shed was demolished By a team of Singjamei police station on May 21 night without issuing any official order to do so, he rued.
Suspecting political ploys in the sudden demolition of the waiting shed, SEYO president demanded the authority concerned to construct a similar shed as soon as possible.
