Ukhrul, March 12 2018:
ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Imphal organized an awareness cum training and input injection programme on "Promoting improved technology of maize production in NEH Region" at Sinakeithei village, Ukhrul district today.
The programme was organised in collaboration with ICAR- Indian Institute of Maize Research, PAU Campus, Ludhiana, Punjab.
Principal Investigator of the project Dr M A Ansari, Scientist, Agronomy, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Imphal; Village Chief K Graceson Zimik and R Tamreichon, Chairperson of SINA Self Help Group Federation attended the function as dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, the dignitaries emphasized on introducing a suitable high quality protein of maize in the region.
High yielding varieties (HYVs) of maize widely adopted in other parts of country, however, most of the farmers in the NEHR are growing low yielding local varieties and in turn are affected by fluctuation in climate change.
The dignitaries further said that most of the farmers are growing monocropping especially in jhum cultivated areas where there is opportunity to diversify into double cropping with the introduction of pre kharif maize based cropping system either in intercropping or sole cropping.
The ICAR, Manipur centre distributed quality seeds of Maize (HQPM 1) for 10 ha area and other critical inputs during the programme.
Around 50 senior farmers and villages from different localities of Sinakeithei villages attended the programme.
