Imphal, December 08 2008:
A RESIDENTIAL accommodation having a capacity of 50 inmates called ASHIANA specially mean for the women and children victims of trafficking commercial sex and sexual exploited was inaugurated today by MLA Thangminlien Kipgen, chairman, Hill Areas Committee at Kangpokpi.
The centre was constructed by the Institute for Community Action and Resource Development (ICARD) with the initiative of the benevolent project Ujawala, a comprehensive scheme for prevention of trafficking and rescue, rehabilitation and re-integration of victims of trafficking for commercial sex and sexually exploited with the support of the Union ministry of women and child development, Shastri Bhavan.
Medical care, legal aid (court work and documentation), education (formal school education for girls), vocational training and income generation are the activities which ASHIANA is currently providing.
