Hands-on training on cancer research begins

A week-long hands-on training cum workshop on 'Techniques for cancer research', which is being organised jointly by Cancer and Molecular Biology Lab (CMBL), Department of Biotechnology, MU and Multidisciplinary Translational Biotech Research Foundation (MTBRF), commenced from Monday at the Court Hall of Manipur University (MU) .
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function, MU Vice Chancellor Prof N Lokendra informed that the varsity has produced many PhD Scholars and published research papers in reputed research journals, thereby contributing to the field of life sciences, biotechnology, and chemistry.
However, there is the need to update the researches undertaken in various universities in view of the New Education Policy (NEP).
Thus, the week-long hands-on training will help in mending the problems/gaps associated with passive learning and practical.
MU Biotechnology Department head and training's organising secretary Prof Lisam Shanjukumar said that it is being organised with the aim of encouraging students and professionals to come up with self-designed experiments on cancer.
As theoretical idea alone is not enough, the participants will take part in the research experiments hands-on.
Pointing out that it takes approximately 2 years for developed countries to research on HIV, the professor remarked that the same research takes about 10 years in India owing to lack of infrastructure and funding.
Presided over by MU School of Life Sciences Dean Prof R Varatharanjan, the inaugural function was attended by IBSD director Prof Pulok K Mukherjee and MU Economics Department Prof E Bijoykumar as guests of honour.
In all, 24 people including students, research scholars and faculties of colleges are attending the workshop.
