CCpur, August 04 2018:
The celebration of a colourful Tangmai (cucumber) festival took place in Hiangtam Lamka today to celebrate the versatility, traditional and economic importance of the humble cucumber, with thousands of visitors gobbling the spontaneously served creeping vine, at free of cost.
The maiden celebration of the festival was held under the aegis of Young Paite Association and is flaunted to be a festival of the Paite tribe.
President of Paite Tribe Council K Suanthang graced the event as principal guest alongside the CSO leaders and elders from the tribe.
With the festival officially kicking off at 11 am, hordes of crowd swarmed the venue an hour early as women volunteers started serving the free delicacy early.
The festival was a cucumber event as the organically grown cucumiform fruits was displayed or served at all corners of the venue from the stage to the competition venue and all through the YPA GHQ Hall's hallway.
Addressing the gathering the PTC president expressed his desire to see the festival as an instrument to bring the community together; and to relieve the age-old traditions and culture of his tribesmen and to revive interest and pride in reaping a bountiful harvest.
About 14 villages participated at the best cucumber competition which was judged on the tenderness and flavour of the vegetable.
