Imphal, September 04 2022:
The second edition of Ayekpam Shyamsunder's popular drama book 'Osman Thambal' reprinted by SM Sheikh in both Meetei Mayek and Bengali scripts was released in a function held at Manipur Press Club, here, on Sunday.
Sahitya Akademi New Delhi's Manipuri Language Advisory Board convenor Nongmaithem Kirankumar and Writers' Union Imphal president Dr Syed Ahmad attended the function as chief guest and president respectively while Manipur University of Culture assistant professor Makhonmani Mongsaba, writer Shyamsunder's daughter Ayekpam Lilabati and Lilong Haoreibi College principal Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh were the guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, SM Sheikh informed that Shyamsunder penned the historical drama based on a true story.
First published in 1973, the play is still a favourite among the people of the state.
Being a historical play based on true incidents makes it more interesting, which is why he is reproducing the original work of the writer, SM Sheikh said, while thanking the late writer for coming up such a fine literary piece.
There are several historical incidents relevant to Meetei Pangal but only few writers are interested in those events.
As a result, those historical incidents are fading away gradually from the pages of history, he said.
He also thanked the late writer's eldest daughter Ayekpam Lilabati and Subrata for granting permission to reprint the book, and Sagolsem Indrakumar and renowned singer Chongtham Kamala for their help in publishing the book.
