Imphal, November 29 2022:
United Committee Manipur (UCM) president Joychandra Konthoujam has urged the state government to look into district boundary disputes seriously and resolve all the disputes by taking a cabinet decision at the earliest.
The UCM president made this appeal to the government during a 'One-Day Farmers' Training Programme' organised by UCM in coordination with agriculture department at Tor-bung community hall on Monday.
The programme was organised as part of UCM's ongoing campaign for self-sufficiency in food production.
The UCM president also warned the government that unwanted incidents and killings are imminent if the district boundary disputes are allowed to persist.
Proposing solution to the problem by framing an effective long-term policy, he pointed out that places like Sugnu, Langol hills, Kakching, Phayeng, Andro, Chandel, Thoubal, Kangpokpi, Jiribam, Tousem, Churachanpur and Torbung are facing district boundary disputes that merit settlement at the earliest to avoid unwanted incidents.
According to Joychandra Konthoujam, Manipur is inhabited by different communities but different issues crop up from time to time as successive governments remained silent on self-styled activities of the people which are uncommon in other states.
Land dispute emerged when a group of people who settle newly in an area assigned another name to the already existed area, the UCM president said and cited the present dispute at Tor bung Keithel.
He said that the western side of Torbung Keithel falls under Bishnupur district and the eastern side under Churachandpur district though the settlers pay revenue tax under Bishnupur district.
Assigning two different names for a particular area within Torbung GP and the tussle for bringing the area under Bishnupur district by a community and to Churachandpur district by another community not only caused land dispute but also could become the reason for possible volatile situation in the area, he cautioned and asked as to which police station the local people would lodge complaint when unwanted incident occurs in the area.
Meanwhile, the farmers' training programme was also attended by Ngakhalawai ZP member Mutum Birachandra Meitei, Torbung GP prad han Chanam Sanahanbi Leimam and up-pradhan Laishram Ibohal Meetei while Arangba Mangang (AO) and Dr RK Roshan (SMS, KVK Horticulture) were resource persons.
At the end of the programme, UCM distributed seeds of various winter crops to the participating local farmers.
