Awareness campaign on forest, wildlife held

Expressing concern over the scale of destruction of forest areas in the state, conservator of forests RK Am-arjit called for collective effort to save the forest stating that conservation and protection of forest cannot be left to the forest department alone.
RK Amarjit was speaking, during an awareness programme cum meeting on forest and wildlife preservation held at Kangpokpi police station under the aegis of Kangpokpi SP Th Vikramjit on Thursday.
The conservator of forests informed that Manipur has been blessed with over 4 lakh of medicinal plants.
However, with deforestation practices being carried out in the state for the last couple of years, there has been drastic change in the environment.
Therefore, there is the need for all to join hands in saving the forest by preventing deforestation in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, SP Vikramjit also urged the people of the state to prevent deforestation and save forest, and informed that the illegal poppy plantation carried out in different parts of Kangpokpi area has greatly impacted the environment of the state.
The forest department officials along with the police department have been trying to prevent such illegal activities.
The programme will help in getting acquainted with the basic ideas for saving the forest and the legal actions that could be taken up against those individuals indulging in illegal activities, he said while adding that such programmes will be conducted in different parts of the district.
Assistant conservator of forests Vikram Nidhe and range forest officer Haojagin Chongloi, who were present as resource persons, spoke on the topics "Forest fire: Causes, effects and its management" and "Importance of forest and wildlife" respectively.
