Imphal, July 22 2013:
Nirvana Foundation observed International Drug User's Memorial Day at its Learning Site of the Training Hall at Khurai Lamlong Bazar yesterday.
The observance was organized with the support of UNODC, GF ROUND-9, NACO, MACS, DAPCO and SPYM.
Speaking on the occasion, Sobhana Sorokhaibam, Vice President of Nirvana Foundation, said that the observance is very significant as the day conveys a message to support the users instead of punishing them.
Normally every section of the society considers drug users as criminals and treated them rudely.
She further said that addiction is a disease to the family.
It does not affect only the individual who uses drugs but also other members of the family.
The problem of addiction can be cured through proper treatment.
Giving the key note address of the observance, Wangkheirakpam Naobi, District Resource Person, program of Link Worker Scheme, Imphal East of Nirvana Foundation, said that the observation of International Drug User's Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have lost their life from drug and alcohol by giving a space for remembrance with dignity, respect, hope and tenderness.
However, very few organizations observed the day in the state and the country.
The undercurrent meaning of the observation is to take part in the agony of the bereaved families of those users who died due to lack of proper treatment or from stigma and discrimination or whatever reason.
This very occasion also gives an opportunity to minimize the wrong attitude of the people towards the users.
Secretary of Nirvana Foundation, L.Jonita, L.S.Coordinator, Tomba Yumnam, PM RIAC, L.Sarojkumar, PM FIDU, and Devlaxmi also spoke on the importance of the occasion, during which individuals from communities shared their experience.
