Birds counted at Lamphelpat and Yaralpat

In a first of its kind, Central Forest Division, in collaboration with various local clubs, launched a bird survey and recording initiative at Lamphelpat (Imphal West) and Yaralpat (Imphal East) today.
The survey was participated by around 50 volunteers, including Forest Department officials, and was monitored by the Chief Conservator of Forest (Territorial-I) Th Mahendra Pratap, Conservator of Forest (Central Circle) L Joykumar and DFO (Central) RK Amarjit.
According to an official source, around 18 different species of birds were recorded from the two water bodies, including birds like Gray Heron, Mallard, Lesser Whistling Teal and Common Teal.
The source also explained that the bird species were more abundant at Lamphelpat as compared to Yaralpat.
Pointing put that necessary records have been collected beginning from this year, the source added that necessary steps will be taken up to include the data in the survey of migratory birds at Loktak Lake next winter.
